(Brooklyn, Nueva York Estados Unidos; 9 de noviembre de 1934 – Seattle, Estados Unidos; 20 de diciembre de 1996) fue un pionero y popular astrónomo, exobiólogo y divulgador científico en todo el mundo.

Biografía

Sagan se crio en Brooklyn, Ciudad de Nueva York, en el seno de una familia de tradición judía y origen ruso.^[3] Su padre, Sam Sagan, fue un trabajador de la industria del vestido. Su madre, Rachel Molly Gruber, fue un ama de casa. Carl recibió su nombre en honor a su abuela, Chaiya Clara, "la madre que nunca conoció", en palabras del propio Sagan. Sagan se graduó en la Rahway High School en New Jersey en 1951. Estudió en la Universidad de Chicago, en la que se graduó como Licenciado en Artes con honores generales y especiales (1954) y como Licenciado en Ciencias (1955), y donde obtuvo una Maestría en Física (1956), antes de acceder al Doctorado en astronomía y astrofísica (1960). Sagan se consideraba agnóstico.

También era un conocido escéptico con un fuerte posicionamiento en contra de las pseudociencias y las religiones en general.

Fue pionero en campos como la exobiología y promotor del proyecto SETI ("Search for ExtraTerrestrial Inteligence" literalmente: Búsqueda de inteligencia extraterrestre), casi desde sus años de postgrado. Conocido por el gran público por la serie para la televisión de Cosmos: Un viaje personal, presentada por él mismo entre 1977 a 1980 escrita y producida para la KCTE de California junto con su tercera y última esposa, la Dra. en biología Ann Druyan, reeditada en los años 1990-1991;^[5] (también estuvo casado con la prestigiosa bióloga Lynn Margulis). Fue titular de la cátedra David Duncan de Astronomía y Ciencias del Espacio de la Universidad de Cornell.^[6] Y director del Laboratorio de Estudios Planetarios de dicha universidad.

Actor. Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, on July 3rd, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. His family moved around a great deal when Cruise was a child in order to accommodate his father's career.

Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after her remarriage. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him.

He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls. After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love, starring Brooke Shields.

Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn.

(Diana Frances;[N 1] née Spencer;1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997) was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. Their sons, Princes William and Henry, are second and third in line to the thrones of the United Kingdom and fifteen other Commonwealth Realms.
A public figure from the announcement of her engagement to Prince Charles, Diana remained the focus of near-constant media scrutiny in the United Kingdom and around the world up to and during her marriage, and after her subsequent divorce. Her sudden death in a car crash was followed by a spontaneous and prolonged show of public mourning. Contemporary responses to Diana's life and legacy have been mixed but a popular fascination with the Princess endures. The long awaited Coroner's Inquest concluded in April 2008 that Diana had been unlawfully killed by the negligent driving of the following vehicles and the driver of the Mercedes in which they were travelling.

Engagement and wedding
Their engagement became official on 24 February 1981, with the heir to the throne presenting the princess-to-be with a walnut-sized £30,000 ring consisting of 14 diamonds surrounding a sapphire.[8] Diana accepted the proposal immediately.
The 20-year-old became the Princess of Wales when she married Prince Charles at St Paul's Cathedral, which offered more seating than Westminster Abbey, which was previously used for royal nuptials, on 29 July 1981 in what was widely billed as a "fairytale wedding" watched by a global television audience of 750 million.[9][10] At the altar Diana accidentally reversed the order of Charles' names, saying Philip Charles Arthur George instead.[11] She also did not say she would "obey," which caused a sensation at the time.[12] The wedding started at 11:20 A.M. BST, and Diana wore a gown valued at £9000 with 25 foot train and the finest lace.[13]

Children
On 5 November 1981, Diana's first pregnancy was officially announced, and she frankly discussed her condition to the press.[14] In the private Lindo wing of St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington on 21 June 1982, Diana gave birth to her first son and heir, William.[15] There was some controversy in the media when she decided to take William, still a baby, on her first major overseas visit to Australia and New Zealand.[16] A second son, Henry was born a little over two years later on 15 September 1984.[17] Diana was a devoted mother and, like most mothers, lavished her sons with love and affection.[18] They came first and foremost in her life. It was she who chose their schools, their clothes and planned their outings. She also negotiated her public duties around their time-tables.

Charity work
Starting in the mid- to late 1980s, the Princess of Wales became very well known for her support of several charity projects. This stemmed naturally from her role as Princess of Wales—she was expected to engage in hospital visits where she comforted the sick and in so doing, assumed the patronage of various charitable organisations—and form an interest in certain illnesses and health-related matters. Diana was a supporter of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a campaign that went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997.[34]

AIDS awareness
In April 1987, the Princess of Wales was one of the first high-profile celebrities to be photographed touching a person infected with HIV at the 'chain of hope' organization. She contributed to changing the public opinion of AIDS sufferers.

Landmines
In January 1997, pictures of the Princess touring an Angolan minefield in a ballistic helmet and flak jacket were seen worldwide. It was during this campaign that some accused the Princess of meddling in politics and declared her a 'loose cannon.'[35] In August 1997, just days before her death, she visited Bosnia with the Landmine Survivors Network. Her interest in landmines was focused on the injuries they create, often to children, long after a conflict is over.
She is believed to have influenced the signing, though only after her death, of the Ottawa Treaty, which created an international ban on the use of anti-personnel landmines.[36] Introducing the Second Reading of the Landmines Bill 1998 to the British House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, paid tribute to Diana's work on landmines:

The United Nations appealed to the nations which produced and stockpiled the largest numbers of landmines (United States, China, India, North Korea, Pakistan, and Russia) to sign the Ottawa Treaty forbidding their production and use, for which Diana had campaigned. Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), said that landmines remained "a deadly attraction for children, whose innate curiosity and need for play often lure them directly into harm's way".

Memorials
Immediately after her death, many sites around the world became briefly ad hoc memorials to Diana, where the public left flowers and other tributes. The largest was outside the gates of Kensington Palace.

Most inspiring 2009: It has to be TED and their amazing stories, among them I have selected the story of, 14 year old William Kamkwamba, who decided to build a windmill to get electricity to his familys home in rural Malawi.

He simply went to the library, read up on the rudimentary workings on a electric generator, decided to improve on the design and then built the windmill with salvaged scrap parts, providing electricity for his family’s home. The power of human curiosity, willingness to learn, triumph of reason and dispersion of information.

This story resonates with everything that is good about humanity and our inherent power to overcome obstacles. Watch and learn !!!

Brad Pitt is one of the leading movie heartthrobs of the 1990s and 2000s and the Oscar-nominated star of the David Fincher film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2998).

Pitt grew up in Missouri and studied journalism in college before dropping out to become an actor.

He scored as the sexy scoundrel hitchhiker in the 1991 movie Thelma and Louise (with Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon), a small role that nonetheless catapulted him to leading man status. Despite the golden glow of a leading man, Pitt quickly became known as a movie star who didn't always have to be the star.

Pitt co-starred with Tom Cruise in Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire (1994), with Bruce Willis in Twelve Monkeys (1995) and with Harrison Ford in The Devil's Own (1997). FIRST was founded by inventor Dean Kamen (Segway) in 1989.
Having dropped out of Worcester Polytechnic Institute before graduating, Mr. Kamen is a self-made man. He is well known for inventing a number of important medical devices, including the AutoSyringe, a mobile dialysis system for medical applications, the first insulin pump, and the Segway Personal Transporter.

The idea of a brilliant visionary secluding himself on a private island is an old one, from Doctor Moreau’s tropical isle of genetic mishaps, to the secret lair of James Bond’s arch nemesis Dr. No.

But few would argue that inventor Dean Kamen qualifies as an evil super villain. Holder of more than 150 patents including the Segway, Kamen is a pioneer not only in the field of eco-friendly transportation, but is also the engineer of invaluable medical and robotic devices like prosthetic limbs and mobility chairs. And when he wants relative peace and quiet, he retires to North Dumpling Island, a 2-acre speck in Connecticut’s Long Island Sound.

Bought for a reported $2.5M in 1986, the island has a sprawling remodelled lighthouse for a home and boasts a small replica of Stonehenge. Living up to the “eccentric inventor” stereotype, denial of a permit for a wind-electricity turbine led him to (jokingly) secede as his own little country- complete with a newspaper, constitution and currency- not to mention an extensive cabinet of Kamen’s friends (including the Minister of Nepotism). (born 5 April 1951) is an American entrepreneur and inventor from New Hampshire.
Born in Rockville Centre, New York, he attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, but dropped out before graduating. His father was Jack Kamen, an illustrator of Mad Magazine, Weird Science and other EC Comics.

Inventions * Segway
Kamen is best known for inventing the product that eventually became known as the Segway PT, an electric, self-balancing human transporter with a complex, computer-controlled gyroscopic stabilization and control system. The device balances on two parallel wheels and is controlled by moving body weight. The machine's development was the object of much speculation and hype after segments of a book quoting Steve Jobs and other notable IT visionaries espousing its society-revolutionizing potential were leaked in December 2001.

Kamen has worked extensively on a project involving Stirling engine designs, attempting to create two machines; one that would generate power and one that would serve as a water purification system. He hopes the project will help improve living standards in developing countries.[1][2] Kamen has a patent issued on his water purifier, U.S. Patent 7,340,879, and other patents pending. Kamen claims that his company DEKA is now working on solar power inventions.[2]
Kamen is also the co-inventor of a compressed-air-powered device which would launch a human into the air in order to quickly launch SWAT teams or other emergency workers to the roofs of tall, inaccessible buildings.[3]
However, Kamen was already a successful and wealthy inventor, after inventing the AutoSyringe, a new type of mobile dialysis system for medical applications, the first insulin pump, and an all-terrain electric wheelchair known as the iBOT, using many of the same gyroscopic balancing technologies that later made their way into the Segway.

In 1989, Kamen founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a robotics competition for high school students. In 2005, it held over 30 regional competitions and one international competition. In 2007, 37 competitions were held in places across the world such as Israel, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. In 2009, the First Open Arab Robotics Competition was held at Dead Sea, Jordan. Kamen remains the driving force behind the organization, providing over 2,500 high schools with the tools needed to learn valuable engineering skills.[citation needed] FIRST has gained a great deal of publicity from companies such as Autodesk, BAE Systems, Bausch and Lomb, CNN, General Motors, Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Boston Gears, Motorola, Delphi, Kodak, Johnson and Johnson, Xerox, Harris, Underwriter's Laboratories, Microchip, and Caterpillar as well as many Universities and colleges.

During his career Kamen has won numerous awards. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1997 for his biomedical devices and for making engineering more popular among high school students. In 1999 he was awarded the 5th Annual Heinz Award in Technology, the Economy and Employment[4], and in 2000 received the National Medal of Technology from then President Clinton for inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide. In April 2002, Kamen was awarded the Lemelson-MIT Prize for inventors, for his invention of the Segway and of an infusion pump for diabetics. In 2003 his "Project Slingshot," a cheap portable water purification system, was named a runner-up for "coolest invention of 2003" by Time magazine.[5] In 2005 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his invention of the AutoSyringe. In 2006 Kamen was awarded the Global Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations. Kamen received an honorary "Doctor of Engineering " degree from Kettering University in 2001, an honorary "Doctor of Science" degree from the University of Arizona on May 16, 2009, and an honorary doctorate from the Wentworth Institute of Technology when he spoke at the college's centennial celebration in 2004, and other honorary doctorates from Bates College in 2007 [1], the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2008, the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2008 and Plymouth State University in May 2008. His primary residence is a hexagonal, shed style mansion he has dubbed Westwind,[1] located in Bedford, New Hampshire, just outside of the larger city of Manchester. The house has at least four different levels and is very eclectically conceived, with such things as hallways resembling mine shafts, 1960s novelty furniture, a collection of vintage wheelchairs, spiral staircases and secret passages, an observation tower, a torture chamber, a fully equipped machine shop, and a huge cast-iron steam engine which once belonged to Henry Ford built into the center atrium of the house (which is actually small in comparison), which Kamen has had converted into a Stirling engine-powered kinetic sculpture.
Also on the property there is a softball field regularly used by the local police force. Kamen owns two helicopters, which he regularly uses to commute to work, and has a hangar built into the house as well.[6][7][8][9]
He is the main subject of Code Name Ginger: the Story Behind Segway and Dean Kamen's Quest to Invent a New World, a nonfiction narrative book by journalist Steve Kemper published by Harvard Business School Press in 2003 (in paperback as Reinventing the Wheel). During 2007 at the FIRST Robotics competition held in Atlanta, Georgia, YouTube (which sponsors FIRST) co-founder Chad Hurley announced a competition for the teams to create a video in which they would describe what it takes to start a FIRST robotics team in an imaginative way. The prize for the winning team was a visit and guided tour of Dean Kamen's house and property.
His company, DEKA, annually creates intricate mechanical presents for him. Recently, the company created a robotic chess player, which is a mechanical arm attached to a chess board, as well as a vintage-looking computer with antique wood, and a converted typewriter as a keyboard. In addition, DEKA has recently received funding from DARPA to work on a brain-controlled prosthetic limb called the Luke Arm.[10]

Rompiendo Paradigmas: Una suerte de “transportador personal” (como ha sido definido), que ha venido a revolucionar el paradigma de lo que debe de ser un vehículo de tierra.

Curie (kürē') [key], family of French scientists. Pierre Curie,. 1859–1906, scientist, and his wife, Marie Sklodowska Curie,. 1867–1934, chemist and physicist, b. Warsaw, are known for their work on radioactivity and on radium. The Curies' daughter Irène (see under Joliot-Curie, family) was also a scientist.

Pierre Curie's early work dealt with crystallography and with the effects of temperature on magnetism; he discovered (1883) and, with his brother Jacques Curie, investigated piezoelectricity (a form of electric polarity) in crystals.

Marie Sklodowska's interest in science was stimulated by her father, a professor of physics in Warsaw. In 1891 she went to Paris to continue her studies at the Sorbonne. In 1895 she married Pierre Curie and engaged in independent research in his laboratory at the municipal school of physics and chemistry where Pierre was director of laboratories (from 1882) and professor (from 1895).

Kennedy brought to the White House the dynamic idea of a “New Frontier” approach in dealing with problems at home, abroad, and in the dimensions of space. His distinctive playing of the electric guitar and his witty lyrics were a major inspiration for the English pop renaissance and for a wide variety of other rock musicians.

A dynamic performer, he also became known for his signature crouching and gliding “duck walk.” Berry produced a string of hits in the late 1950s, including “Maybellene,” “Rock and Roll Music,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” and “Johnny B. Goode.”

In 1962 he was sentenced to two years in prison on the charge of transporting a minor across state lines for immoral purposes.

In 1866 he perfected a combination of nitroglycerine and kieselguhr, a diatomaceous earth, to which he gave the name dynamite.

After abandoning the dream of becoming a professional football goalkeeper, Pavarotti spent seven years in vocal training. While undertaking an international "farewell tour", Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2006. The tenor fought back against the implications of this diagnosis, undergoing major abdominal surgery and making plans for the resumption and conclusion of his singing commitments.[19] On 6 September, 2007, however, as his manager, Terri Robson noted in an e-mail statement, "The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness".[20][21][22]
According to several reports, just before he died, the singer had received both the sacraments of Penance and Anointing of the Sick from the Roman Catholic Church.[23]

Pavarotti's funeral was held in Modena Cathedral. Romano Prodi and Kofi Annan attended.[24] The Frecce Tricolori, the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force, flew overhead, leaving green-white-red smoke trails. After a funeral procession through the centre of Modena, Pavarotti's coffin was taken the final ten kilometres to Montale Rangone, a village part of Castelnuovo Rangone, and interred in his parents' grave. The funeral, in its entirety, was also telecast live on CNN. The Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival Hall flew black flags in mourning.[25] Tributes were published by many opera houses, such as London's Royal Opera House.[26] The Italian football giant Juventus F.C., of which Pavarotti was a lifelong fan, was represented at the funeral and posted a farewell message on its website which said: "Ciao Luciano, black-and-white heart" referring to the team's famous stripes when they play on their home ground. A tribute concert featuring many performers trained by Pavarotti himself was held on February 14, 2008 at New York City's Avery Fisher Hall.[27]

Surviving family
Pavarotti is survived by four daughters: three, Lorenza, Cristina and Giuliana, with first wife Adua, to whom he was married for 34 years; and one, Alice, with second wife Nicoletta Mantovani. At the time of his death, he had one granddaughter.

Vladimir Putin was elected president of the Russian Federation in 2000 as the hand-picked successor of Boris Yeltsin. After earning a law degree in 1975, Putin joined the KGB, the security force of the former Soviet Union.

He spent years working primarily in East Germany, then left the service in 1991 and became active in the politics of St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). He was brought to Moscow by Yeltsin in 1996 and served as an administrator in the Kremlin and an official for the security organizations which replaced the KGB.

In 1999 Putin became Yeltsin's fifth prime minister in 17 months, then became acting president when Yeltsin left office. He was officially elected to the office in 2000 and then re-elected in a landslide vote in March of 2004. As president he gained a reputation as a clever and ruthless political operator with a hunger for Russian power and not too much concern for the niceties of democracy or diplomacy. He stepped down in 2008 (as required by term limits) and was replaced by his own hand-picked successor, Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev then installed Putin as prime minister, a move which left Putin, as The New York Times put it, as "the country's dominant politician, with a firm grip on power."

Educated in India and in London, he was admitted to the English bar in 1889 and practiced law unsuccessfully in India for two years.

In 1893 he went to South Africa, where he was later joined by his wife and children. There he became a successful lawyer and leader of the Indian community and involved himself in the fight to end discrimination against the country's Indian minority.

In South Africa he read widely, drawing inspiration from such sources as the Bhagavad-Gita, John Ruskin, Leo Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau, and his personal philosophy underwent significant changes.

He abandoned (c.1905) Western ways and thereafter lived abstemiously (including celibacy); this became symbolized in his eschewal of material possessions and his dress of loincloth and shawl. While in South Africa he organized (1907) his first satyagraha [holding to the truth], a campaign of civil disobedience expressed in nonviolent resistance to what he regarded as unjust laws.

So successful were his activities that he secured (1914) an agreement from the South African government that promised the alleviation of anti-Indian discrimination.

Return to India
He returned (1915) to India with a stature equal to that of the nationalist leaders Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Gandhi actively supported the British in World War I in the hope of hastening India's freedom, but he also led agrarian and labor reform demonstrations that embarrassed the British. The Amritsar massacre of 1919 stirred Indian nationalist consciousness, and Gandhi organized several satyagraha campaigns. He discontinued them when, against his wishes, violent disorder ensued.

His program included a free, united India; the revival of cottage industries, especially of spinning and the production of handwoven cloth (khaddar); and the abolition of untouchability (see caste). These ideas were widely and vigorously espoused, although they also met considerable opposition from some Indians. The title Mahatma [great soul] reflected personal prestige so high that he could unify the diverse elements of the organization of the nationalist movement, the Indian National Congress, which he dominated from the early 1920s.
In 1930, in protest against the government's salt tax, he led the famous 200-mi (320-km) march to extract salt from the sea. For this he was imprisoned but was released in 1931 to attend the London Round Table Conference on India as the sole representative of the Indian National Congress. When the Congress refused to embrace his program in its entirety, Gandhi withdrew (1934), but his influence was such that Jawaharlal Nehru, his protégé, was named leader of the organization.

Indian Independence
In 1942, after rejection of his offer to cooperate with Great Britain in World War II if the British would grant immediate independence to India, Gandhi called for satyagraha and launched the Quit India movement. He was then interned until 1944. Gandhi was a major figure in the postwar conferences with the viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, and Muslim League leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah that led to India's independence and the carving out of a separate Muslim state (Pakistan), although Gandhi vigorously opposed the partition.
When violence broke out between Hindus and Muslims, Gandhi resorted to fasts and tours of disturbed areas to check it. On Jan. 30, 1948, while holding a prayer and pacification meeting at New Delhi, he was fatally shot by a Hindu fanatic who was angered by Gandhi's solicitude for the Muslims. After his death his methods of nonviolent civil disobedience were adopted by protagonists of civil rights in the United States and by many protest movements throughout the world.

Jean-Francois Champollion, a Frenchman, was the first to effectively decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1812.

With his new discoveries, scholars from around the world were able to read and understand Egyptian literature for the first time. It was revolutionary!

What Champollion Found

In "The Keys of Egypt," Lesley and Roy Adkins explore the amazing story of Champollion and his discovery of a system to understand hieroglyphs. As the authors write, "Champollion's success was based on twenty years of obsessive hard work, all too often in difficult circumstances, and he would soon be able to read the literature from 3,000 years of human history that had been unintelligible for centuries."

Through his many years of work, the wonders of Egypt was finally opened to the world. As he reassembled pieces of papyrus, Champollion said, "I have gathered, while scarcely breathing for fear of reducing them to powder, such little pieces of papyrus, the last and only refuge of the memory of a king who in his lifetime perhaps found himself cramped in the immense palace of Karnak." With Champollion's important breakthrough, we were able to read and understand the narrative works of Egyptian literature, along with an assorted array of letters, treatises, lists, archives, and accounts from ancient Egypt. In fact, dramatics works are the only form of writing not found in the ancient texts.

How He Discovered Hieroglyphs

Champollion was something of a child genius. Adept at learning languages, he studied Hebrew, Ethiopic, and Arabic; then, later, he studied Persian, Sanskrit, and Coptic. His study of Coptic, along with his passionate research of all things related to Egyptian culture, gave him an edge when he began his examination of ancient hieroglyphs in 1808. As Champollion struggled to make a living, and continue his research, he continually worked to influence the procurement of ancient Egyptian artifacts, many of which were being sold to the highest bidder. Napoleon had already started the Egyptian collection, when he invaded Egypt in 1798. With the remnants he brought back, a mania for all things Egypt had begun.

A young boy at the time of Napoleon's Egyptian expedition, Champollion had caught "Egyptomania."

Obsessed with breaking the code, Champollion wanted the artifacts to be available for study and analysis, and he didn't want them to disappear into private collections, never to be seen again.

Of course, Champollion had partly selfish motives for encouraging the procurement of the ancient scrolls and statues. As he began to develop his system of deciphering hieroglyphs, he needed more examples of hieroglyphs for testing his theories. He published his discoveries in a series of works: "Lettre a M. Dacier" (1822); "Deux lettres a M. Ie duc de Blacas d'Aulps, relatives au musée royal égyptien de Turin" (Paris, 1824-1826); "Catalogue des monuments égyptiens du musée du Vatican" (Rome, 1826), and "Panthéon égyptien" (1823-1831). When he wrote a pamphlet about the gods and goddesses of Egypt, Champollion wrote to a colleague: "My aim in publishing this collection is to make clear the various mythical people represented on the monuments of Egypt, to distinguish them one from another; without claiming to enter into the very foundation of their emblematic or symbolical significance."

In a time of political and social upheaval in France, Louis-Philippe acknowledged Champollion's success in a speech: "It must make one proud that a Frenchman has begun to penetrate the mysteries that the Ancients only revealed to some rather experienced followers and to decipher these emblems."

Never in good health, the long hours and poor living conditions he often was forced to endure ultimately led to his untimely death at the age of 41. The authors write: "The bereavement of a single family becomes a general bereavement for all those who appreciate literature and who are interested in it progress."

Duties included managing the careers of 30 professional civil servants with diverse set of skills in materials science. Also serve as the overall technical monitor of contractor support that included more than 20 contractors. Responsible for the oversight of the branch’s activities in the areas of materials and processes, fracture control, non destructive evaluation, failure analysis, and nano materials research. More specifically, managed branch resources to address materials usage issues with respect to flammability, toxicity, contamination, space environment compatibility, and corrosion. Materials testing and fracture control analysis of flight and non-flight hardware were also significant activities within the branch. Served as the project lead for the development of a space qualified borescope for future on-orbit EVA inspection applications.

Selected by NASA in May 2004. In February 2006 he completed Astronaut Candidate Training that included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in Shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological training, T-38 flight training, and water and wilderness survival training. Hernandez was initially assigned to the Astronaut Office Shuttle Branch supporting Shuttle launch and landing preparations at .Kennedy Space Center.

Hernandez is assigned to serve as a mission specialist on space shuttle Discovery on the STS-128 mission, targeted for launch in August 2009. Discovery will carry a Multi-Purpose Logistics Module filled with science and storage racks to the station. The mission will include two spacewalks to remove and replace a materials processing experiment outside ESA’s Columbus module and return an empty ammonia tank assembly. The mission will also exchange ISS crew members.

1987-1991 Electronics Engineer, Material Analysis Group. Refined signal and image processing skills for applications in radar imaging, computed tomography, acoustic imaging and other non-destructive evaluation techniques

1991-1994 Electronics Engineer, Chemistry and Material Science Group. Developed quantitative x-ray film imaging analysis techniques that allowed the characterization of low-density materials for use in the development of an X-Ray laser as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative Program. Developed material x-ray transport models that allowed for the development of human tissue absorbed dose models useful for medical imaging applications.

1994-1996 Group Leader, Chemistry and Material Science Group. Managed the career development of twenty-nine professional technical staff members who supported chemistry and materials science research activities. Identified and developed the Group’s programmatic research support opportunities. Carried out own research activities as a principal investigator in the area of x-ray physics and image processing.

1996-1999 Deputy Program Manager, Highly Enriched Uranium Implementation Program. Responsible for the implementation of a signed bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Russian Federation for the U.S. purchase of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in the form of low enriched uranium (LEU) derived from the dismantlement of Russian nuclear weapons. Responsibilities included utilizing national laboratory resources for the purpose of ensuring the U.S. government that the LEU purchased was derived from dismantled nuclear weapons. This was accomplished by developing technical training modules for U.S. multi-lab and multi-agency experts, which allowed them to visit Russian facilities and effectively perform inspections in accordance to U.S.-Russian signed agreements, protocols and annexes. Fiscal planning responsibilities for the $16 Million multi-lab implementation budget and direct oversight of the $6 million annual budget for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory component.

1999-2001 Program Manager, Office of International Material Protection and Emergency Cooperation. On a two-year change-of-station assignment at the U.S. Department of Energy, Washington, D.C. Managed the integration and allocation of Department of Energy assets and expertise, including the national laboratories and contractors, in planning, directing, and implementing U.S. cooperation with the Russian Federation in the program of Nuclear Materials, Protection, Control and Accounting (MPC&A). Developed and implemented policies, strategies and plans and objectives to enhance U.S. national security and reduce threat of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism. These goals were accomplished by rapidly improving the security of large quantities of attractive, weapons-usable nuclear material at the closed Ministry of Atomic Energy (MinAtom) cities that compromise Russia’s nuclear weapons complex. Proposed, defended and executed annual budget of over $14 million to support extensive engineering, technical safety, security, and environmental research and policy development with regard to MPC&A at three of the seven MinAtom sites

Nikola Tesla (Никола Тесла),
nacido en Smiljan, Croacia (entonces en el Imperio Austríaco), en el seno de una familia serbia, el 10 de julio de 1856. Fue un físico, matemático, ingeniero eléctrico y célebre inventor,[1] que revolucionó la teoría eléctrica inventando y desarrollando la corriente alterna. Falleció en Nueva York, Estados Unidos, el 7 de enero de 1943. La unidad de inducción del campo magnético del SI (Sistema Internacional de Unidades) lleva el nombre de tesla (T) en su honor.

Biografía
Nikola Tesla nació en el pueblo de Smiljan en la Frontera Militar (Vojna Krajina) austrohúngara,[2] se educó en Graz y posteriormente en Praga donde estudió ingeniería eléctrica. En 1881 viaja a Budapest para trabajar en una compañía de telégrafos norteamericana. Al año siguiente se trasladó a París para trabajar en una de las compañías de Thomas Alva Edison, donde realizó su mayor aportación: la teoría de la corriente alterna en electricidad, lo cual le permitió idear el primer motor de inducción en 1882.
En 1884 se trasladó a Nueva York, creando su propia compañía en 1886 tras romper con Edison después de tener muchas diferencias ante la eficiencia entre la corriente continua (CC) y la corriente alterna (CA) de Tesla. Tenía un laboratorio en la calle Houston en Nueva York. En 1887 logra construir el motor de inducción de corriente alterna. Posteriormente sin medios económicos para realizar todas sus investigaciones e inventos, conoció a Westinghouse, un científico y empresario adinerado que logró, mediante un acuerdo ecónomico, comprarle las patentes de sus inventos y lo contrató para trabajar con él en sus laboratorios Westinghouse, donde concibió el sistema polifásico para trasladar la electricidad a largas distancias. Empeñado Tesla en mostrar la superioridad de la CA sobre la CC de Edison se desarrolló lo que se conoce como "guerra de las corrientes".
En 1893 consiguió transmitir energía electromagnética sin cables, construyendo el primer radiotransmisor (adelantándose a Guglielmo Marconi). Ese mismo año en Chicago, se hizo una exhibición pública de la corriente alterna, demostrando su superioridad sobre la corriente continua de Edison. Tesla presentó la patente correspondiente en 1897, dos años después de que Marconi lograra su primera transmisión de radio. No obstante, Marconi registró su patente el 10 de noviembre de 1900 y fue rechazada por ser considerada una copia de la patente de Tesla. Se inició un litigio entre la compañía de Marconi y Tesla. Tras recibir el testimonio de numerosos científicos destacados, la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos de América falló a favor de Tesla en 1943. Pero la mayoría de los libros mencionan a Marconi como el inventor de la radio.[3]
A finales del siglo XIX, Tesla demostró que usando una red eléctrica resonante y usando lo que en aquél tiempo se conocía como "corriente alterna de alta frecuencia" (hoy se considera de baja frecuencia) sólo se necesitaba un conductor para alimentar un sistema eléctrico, sin necesidad de otro metal ni un conductor de tierra. Tesla llamó a este fenómeno la "transmisión de energía eléctrica a través de un único cable sin retorno". Ideó y diseñó los circuitos eléctricos resonantes formados por una bobina y un condensador, claves de la emisión y recepción de ondas radioeléctricas con selectividad y potencia gracias al fenómeno de la resonancia. Lo que de hecho creaba y transmitía eran ondas electromagnéticas a partir de alternadores de alta frecuencia sólo que no lo aplicó a la trasmision de señales de radio como hizo Marconi sino a un intento de trasmitir energía eléctrica a distancia sin usar cables. Tesla afirmó en 1901: "Hace unos diez años, reconocí el hecho de que para transportar corrientes eléctricas a largas distancias no era en absoluto necesario emplear un cable de retorno, sino que cualquier cantidad de energía podría ser transmitida usando un único cable. Ilustré este principio mediante numerosos experimentos que, en su momento, generaron una atención considerable entre los hombres de ciencia."[4]
No obstante, Edison aún trataba de disuadir la teoría de Tesla mediante una campaña para fomentar ante el público el peligro que corrían al utilizar este tipo de corriente, por lo que Harold P. Brown, un empleado de Thomas Edison contratado para investigar la electrocución, desarrolló la silla eléctrica.
En la primavera de 1891, Tesla realizó demostraciones con varias máquinas ante el Instituto Americano de Ingenieros Eléctricos en la Universidad de Columbia. Demostró de esta forma que todo tipo de aparatos podían ser alimentados a través de un único cable sin un conductor de retorno. Este sistema de transmisión unifilar fue protegido en 1897 por la patente U.S.0,593,138.
En las cataratas del Niágara se construyó la primera central hidroeléctrica gracias a los desarrollos de Tesla en 1893, consiguiendo en 1896 transmitir electricidad a la ciudad de Búfalo (Nueva York). Con el apoyo financiero de George Westinghouse, la corriente alterna sustituyó a la continua. Tesla fue considerado desde entonces el fundador de la industria eléctrica.
En 1891 inventó la bobina de Tesla.[5]

Explosión en Tunguska (Siberia)

Se le ha relacionado en más de una ocasión con la explosión ocurrida en Tunguska (Siberia). Cuentan algunos de sus biógrafos que le dijo a un amigo, que hizo una expedición al Ártico, que le saludaría con un destello de luz. El mismo día en que iba a llevarse a cabo dicho aviso se produjo la misteriosa explosión en esta zona de Rusia.[cita requerida]

Es muy conocida su enemistad con Thomas Edison. Después de trabajar varios meses mejorando los diseños de los generadores de corriente continua, y mientras le brindaba varias patentes que Edison registraba como propias, éste se negó a pagarle los 50 000 dólares que le había prometido si tenía éxito (y usando las mejoras gratis), aduciendo que se trató de una "broma americana", e incluso se negó a subirle el sueldo a 25 dólares a la semana. Edison inventó la silla eléctrica que emplea corriente alterna (desarrollada por Tesla) en lugar de corriente continua -de la que él era el impulsor- para así dar mala fama al invento del europeo.

Se dice que Nikola Tesla no hacía planos, sino que lo memorizaba todo. También se dice que sólo dormía tres horas al día e inclusive que personas allegadas a él, lo vieron en activo hasta 150 horas seguidas. Buena parte de la etapa final de su vida la vivió absorto con el proceso judicial que entabló en lo relativo a la invención de la radio, que se disputaba con Marconi, pues Tesla había inventado un dispositivo similar al menos 15 años antes que Bell. En la década de los sesenta el Tribunal Supremo de los Estados Unidos dictaminó que la patente relativa a la radio era legítimamente propiedad de Tesla, reconociéndolo de forma legal como inventor de ésta, si bien esto no trascendió a la opinión pública, que sigue considerando a Marconi como su inventor.

Tesla, podría ser considerado el mayor científico y el mejor inventor de la historia (al menos conocido). Dada la lista, a día de hoy falta mucho por conocer de este grandísimo, pero ignorado, genio. Recordemos que actualmente existe muy poca gente que haya replicado con éxito tan solo algunos de los inventos de este científico. Principalmente, porque Tesla tenía un total y absoluto conocimiento de la verdadera naturaleza de la energía eléctrica, que, inclusive, podríamos asegurar que los centros de investigación públicos y las universidades no pueden comprender gran parte de la teoría que él aplicaba.

Biographie
Pedro Armendáriz fit ses études à l'école de San Antonio au Texas puis à l'Institut Polytechnique de Californie.

Il débuta sa carrière de comédien au théâtre à Mexico au début des années 1930. Il tourna son premier film en 1935. Personnalité forte et haute en couleur il contribua largement à la renommée du cinéma mexicain. Sa carrière s'internationalisa après la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec des films aux États-Unis, en France, en Italie.

Atteint d'un cancer, Pedro Armendáriz se suicida le 18 juin 1963 dans sa chambre d'hôpital à Los Angeles juste après avoir tourné ses scènes dans Bons baisers de Russie.

Son fils Pedro Armendáriz Jr. né en 1940, est aussi acteur. Il est apparu dans le James Bond Permis de tuer en 1989, vingt-six ans après le rôle tenu par son père dans Bons baisers de Russie.

Actor cinematográfico cuya trayectoria se caracterizó por la sobriedad y emoción. Pedro Armendáriz nació en Ciudad de México en 1912.
Hijo de padre mexicano y madre estadounidense estudió en San Antonio, Texas, y en San Luis Obispo, California, por lo que dominaba a la perfección la lengua inglesa. Su debut en el cine nacional mexicano ocurrió en 1935 con la película María Elena
Después vinieron otras como El corsario negro y Al rayar el Sol. Sin embargo, las demostraciones más plenas de su histrionismo quedaron plasmadas en las películas : Enamorada y La Perla, bajo la dirección de Emilio “El Indio” Fernández. Pedro Armendáriz reunía las cualidades de una estrella de cine: calidad interpretativa, su fotogenia y dominio de las expresiones.
Aunque era una persona refinada, aparecía en la pantalla como un hombre rudo y varonil, e incluso en ocasiones hasta fiero y brutal... Pero siempre con un estilo que dejaba fuera de toda duda su calidad.
Su prestigio como artista lo llevó a Estados Unidos, para trabajar en Hollywood, y su perfecto dominio en el inglés le facilitó las cosas. En esta faceta de su vida profesional, destacan películas como The Fugitive (1946-1947), FortApache (1947), Three Godfathers (Estrenada en español como los tres alegres compadres, en una nueva versión que reunía, además, a Jorge Negrete y Andrés Soler, 1948) y We Were Strangers (1949).
En 1946, obtuvo la Palma de Oro del Festival de Cannes por María Candelaria; en 1947, ganó el León de Oro de la Bienal de Venecia; en 1948, le fue concedido el Ariel de México por La Perla y en 1953 de nuevo se le otorgó el Ariel, por El reboso de Soledad.
Aunque bien puede decirse que Pedro Armendáriz no tuvo límites como actor, fue al lado de Emilio “El Indio” Fernández con quien desarrolló al máximo su potencial. Otras de las películas que resultaron de esta mancuerna fueron: Distinto amanecer, Las abandonadas, El capitán malacara, El Capitán Veneno, Bugambilia y Juan Charrasqueado

VERSION DOS (editando) - Pedro Armendáriz Actor mexicano Nació el 9 de mayo de 1912 en ciudad de México y estudió en San Antonio, Texas. Más tarde se trasladó a Los Ángeles donde estudió Ingeniería aeronáutica, carrera que abandonó por el teatro. Trabajó en diversos oficios hasta que debutó en el cine en 1935, con María Elena. En los años siguientes rodó varias películas de éxito local, hasta hacer sus mejores interpretaciones junto al director Emilio Fernández en Flor silvestre, María Candelaria (ambas de 1943) y La perla (1945), por la que recibió el premio Ariel de la producción mexicana. Popular por interpretar en el cine papeles de indígena tanto en producciones de su país como estadounidenses. Fue una de las principales estrellas masculinas del cine mexicano en la época de su gran expansión. Trabajó también para Bustillo Oro (La loca de la casa, 1950), para Buñuel (El bruto, 1952) y Gavaldón (La escondida, 1956). El éxito le condujo a Hollywood y a Europa, pero su carrera internacional fue menos significativa, a excepción de tres filmes de John Ford: El fugitivo (1947), Tres padrinos (1949) y Fort Apache (1948). Se suicidó el 18 de junio de 1963 en Los Angeles, California (Estados Unidos).

De ses fiançailles avec le prince de Galles en 1981 jusqu'à sa mort en 1997 lors d'un accident de voiture controversé à Paris, Diana fut l'une des femmes les plus célèbres du monde, la célébrité féminine prééminente de sa génération, une figure emblématique de la mode.
